The story of haantje@atoom.net

In the early days of broadband internet (in the Netherlands, around
'97/'98) I registered
the domain 'atoom.net', which is Dutch for 'atom', but that name
was already taken. Other contenders where 'aarrghhh.net', but
we (me and @bdekruijff) figured nobody would remember the number
of a's nor the number of h's. So 'atoom.net' it was.

Then the fun started, running a mail-server, with
sendmail
,
was all the rage. And of course you needed to run a webserver (
apache
)
for your
domain:

Then we figured that it would be nice to create a special e-mail address
for who people wanted to drink some beer. The best pub in the neighborhood
was Cafe 't Haantje (dutch link)
which was a mere 476 (+/- 10) footsteps away (don't ask how I know).

So we created
haantje@atoom.net

The idea was that other students/friends would send an e-mail to that
address if they we're going to go 't Haantje or into the city for some
drinks.

The first evening, we send an email to the new address saying we were going
the bar and everybody was free to join us. The effect was a nice,
crowded and special evening at the pub. (And some sort of a hangover the
next day.)

This next day somebody else mailed to 'haantje@atoom.net' to ask another
set of people to go. Of course we went too.

The third day, we went also. And the fourth, fifth and sixth day. And the week
after that. Needless to say: this was working really well.

After a month I took down the e-mail address: It was working too well.
We were drinking too much, and it was really hard not to go when you
knew other people were going to the pub.

Also we needed our sleep and our study (computer science) needed some
attention too... So the e-mail alias got deleted and was never
resurrected again.

So ends the story of 'haantje@atoom.net', downed by its own success.
But... it was a month to remember.

I've got my PSP for 1 day now... And I love it. I'm playing
Need for Speed: Shift and Medal of Honor (FPS do suck indeed on
consoles).

But!

I've got my Amiga gaming feeling back! Today I've played for hours
on the couch, racing against other (computer) players. Love the
graphics and the music. Amiga deja-vu all over again.

I'm glad I didn't buy a Nintendo DSi.

Well, in my first week after my holiday I decided to get my
LPI-2
certification. And I made it, so now I can gives our LPIC-2 classes.

I took LPI 201 on Thursday and 202 on Friday. The exams were a lot
harder than the LPI-1 exams, which I took last year. Not knowing
anything about
Apache2
,
Courier Imap
or FTP servers did not
help either :) Luckily I do know a lot about LDAP,
pam
and other
low level system configuration systems.

All in all, an LPI-2 certification is worth having and the person having
one obviously knows his or her way around Linux.

To top it of I want get LPI-3, luckily this is only one exam; 301.

Gelukkig was de
snackbar
